The course is intended for deck and engineer
officers with low competence in English. The course provides training
in basic grammar structures and limited maritime terminology (ship's
construction and main gear, crew, duties of crew members, performance
of a voyage). The course also provides training in elementary social
communications (greetings, requests, obtaining information, apologizing
etc.). Elementary written communications can be offered if required.

The course provides training in spoken
and written maritime English for deck officers according to standard
maritime academy programme requirements: nautical publications (charts,
pilot books/sailing directions, lists of lights, guide to port entry,
notices to mariners), communications connected with watch-keeping duties,
pilotage, anchoring, towing, mooring, clearing a ship in and out, cargo
operations, safety on board and social responsibilities, meteorological
and navigational messages.

The course provides training according
to amendments to STCW 78/95 which put forward new requirements concerning
the English language competence including both external communications
(with VTS, pilot service, port authorities etc.) and on-board communications
in multi-lingual crews. The course includes training in communications
connected with emergency procedures, personal safety on board, watch-keeping
duties, medical first aid, organization and management of the crew with
a particular emphasis on IMO “Standard Marine Communication Phrases”.
The main objective of the course is to train students to spell out their
duties in the English language as required by STCW 78/95 (sections A-II/1,
A-II/2) and ISM Code (clause 6).

The training is performed on the basis
of multimedia software “Maritime English”, “Maritime English” video
course and professional videos of P&I Club. The final exercises
are provided on the full-mission Bridge Simulator. The certificate is
given to each trainee who successfully passes the final exam.

The course provides training according
to amendments to STCW 78/95 in oral and written English sufficient to
enable the officer to use engineering publications and perform engineering
duties. The course includes training in communications connected with
emergency procedures, personal safety on board, watch-keeping duties,
medical first aid, organization and management of the crew with a particular
emphasis on IMO "Standard Marine Communication Phrases". The main objective
of the course is to train students to spell out their duties in the
English language as required by STCW 78/95 (sections A-III/1, A-III/2)
and ISM Code (clause 6).
