About us

Admiral Makarov State Maritime Academy (SMA) founded in 1876 is the biggest maritime educational institution in Russia. Makarov Training Centre which started its work in 1995 integrated the advantages of the Academy's teaching experience and traditions with the strategy of the rapid development and immediate response to the market needs cultivated by the staff of the training Centre.

Courses suggested to your attention are divided into 3 categories:

1. Training and certification in compliance with "mandatory" programmes, required by the new edition of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch-keeping for Seafarers (STCW-78/95) such as GMDSS, ARPA etc.

2. Training in compliance with "non-mandatory" programmes connected with traffic control, safe management and pollution prevention (ISM-code, VTS, Bridge Team Management, etc.) for the personnel of the ships and shipping companies.

3. Specialized courses aimed at training personnel for definite types of ships, equipment or other courses at request of the shipowners, crewing companies and other organizations.

GMDSS training of radio specialists (ship operators, radio electronics, watch captains of the RCC, Port State Control inspectors, Surveyors of Shipping Register, Marine Administration engineers etc.), navigators (radar observation and plotting, ARPA, ECDIS, ship handling etc.), engineers (organization of watch-keeping in the engine room) is effected in one training centre.

Quality and high efficiency of the courses is primarily ensured by:

1. Modern and flexible programmes. Practically all the programmes are approved by the Russian Federation Marine Administration.

2. Experienced and competent instructors many of whom have been working as Masters and Chief Officers. Some instructors had additional training in leading training centres of Europe and the USA. Professors of the Academy ensure high level of teaching methods.

3. Modern and specialized simulators and modern ship equipment functions and possibilities of which meet the requirements of the most exigent ship owners, including the foreign ones.

Friendly atmosphere and additional service enable the students to concentrate at their classes, "plunge" into the reality being imitated.

More than 50 existing programmes and more than 13 hundred specialists prepared by the centre convince shipping and crewing companies as well as seafarers that if you want to obtain internationally approved qualification document you should study at the Admiral Makarov State Maritime Academy Training Centre.
