Russian-Finnish
Oil Pollution Response and Environment Protection Project
On 10 May, 2005 in St. Petersburg the agreement between the Admiral
Makarov State Maritime Academy and representatives of Kotka City Administration
(Finland) was signed to provide safe navigation and environment protection
in the Gulf of Finland (SUMMERI project).
Bearing in mind the serious consequences of accidents and possible
environmental damage in connection with the increasing volumes of oil
transported, the necessity to make tougher the requirements for training
tankers crew and oil pollution response specialists is obvious.
The purpose of the project is preparing a harmonized system for training
oil pollution response specialists in Russia, Finland, Estonia.
In the framework of realization of this project it is planned to develop
programs and methods of training, exercises and recommendations for
conducting complex training. The results of this project realization
will be worked through when performing joint Russian-Finnish training.
This project is subsidized from the funds of the European Union intended
for the development of international cooperation in the area of the
Gulf of Finland and the Baltic Sea. The project is planned to be completed
in the beginning of 2007.
